The Taming of the Shrew, a new ballet based on William Shakespeare’s classic comedy is an appropriate way to begin the Bolshoi ballet season in 2016 - Shakespeare 400 – the 400th anniversary of the great playwright’s death.

Many men dream of marrying the lovely Bianca, but her father will not let anyone marry her before her elder sister, the ill-tempered Katherina, is married too. She is the headstrong, stubborn shrew of the title, but her persistent suitor Petruchio fully intends to turn her into the ‘ideal bride’.

French choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot lands a coup with his adaptation of Shakespeare’s great play tailored specifically to the Bolshoi dancers, and achieves a magnetic two hours of breath-taking, nonstop dance unlike any other, portraying the Bolshoi’s audacity and energy in a completely new way and showcasing some of their greatest stars.

This new production is exclusive to the Bolshoi and the ballet has only been performed in Moscow and Monaco so this live broadcast is a rare chance to see it.

The programme of Bolshoi ballet screenings are fundraisers for Chepstow Museum. So see these ballets at Chepstow, enjoy fantastic performances with the magnificent dancers of the Bolshoi, and support the Museum at the same time.
