Dirty Protest Theatre to stage 2012 Wales Drama Award winning play Parallel Lines
Welsh new writing company Dirty Protest Theatre is to stage the inaugural Wales Drama Award winning play, Parallel Lines.

Katherine Chandler’s play was chosen from 250 other Welsh plays by a panel of judges for BBC Wales and National Theatre Wales which included former Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies and Emmy-award winning Abi Morgan.
Swansea-born Davies said of Chandler’s play, “In the end you’re looking for an individual voice and what I loved about Katherine’s piece is the fact it’s a very strong play. She has so much to say about the world.”

The play follows 15-year-old Steph and her teacher Simon. Both live in Cardiff but their parallel lives couldn’t be more different. When an accusation is made and their worlds collide, things aren’t as simple as they might seem.

The premiere of this powerful play will be staged at Chapter Arts Centre in November.

Director Catherine Paskell says, “When Parallel Lines won the inaugural Wales Drama Award last year, we knew it was the prefect play for Dirty Protest to bring to the stage.

“With her unique, authentic voice, Cardiff writer Katherine Chandler has written a play that is urgent, gripping and darkly funny. The themes of power, class and truth make Parallel Lines truly relevant to contemporary Cardiff audiences.”

For the past year Dirty Protest Theatre has been pushing its boundaries and taking new Welsh writing to new audiences. As Wales’s national new writing fringe company they were invited to perform its Plays in the Bag concept with a summer tour of new plays to the Almeida Theatre, the Royal Court Theatre and Latitude Festival.

The company will also join forces with National Theatre Wales in October for a celebration of the new breed of Welsh writing talent, Dirty, Gifted and Welsh, a whole weekend dedicated to new writing.

And now this November, Dirty Protest will bring their second full-length original production to Welsh audiences.

Catherine says, “We are excited to produce the premiere production of Parallel Lines exactly one year on from the Wales Drama Award in November 2013.

Producing Parallel Lines in partnership with Chapter and with the support of the Arts Council of Wales, we know that this production will inspire, provoke and entertain audiences who are already fans of Dirty Protest's accessible, exciting productions, as well as introducing a whole new audience to our work.”
