New head for Gwanwyn arts programme for over-50s

New head for Gwanwyn arts programme for over-50s A WELSH charity has appointed Emma Robinson to run a Wales-wide arts festival and arts programme for over 50s.

Emma is Age Cymru’s new Arts and Creativity Development Officer.

She will be curating and developing the charity’s Gwanwyn festival for over 50s which runs each May and a year-round arts programme.

The former touring officer with Hijinx Theatre has also previously worked with Brotfabrik arts centre in Berlin, Comic Relief and Cardiff Council.

Says Emma:

“I am really excited to be working on the Gwanwyn festival for Age Cymru.

“This role provides fantastic opportunities to contribute to artistic work and developments throughout Wales.

“I want to get more older people involved in the arts and also hope to challenge preconceptions about what it is like to grow older in Wales, by working in partnership with artistic organisations and community groups.

“Ultimately, I want to make Gwanwyn the ‘go-to’ festival for people of all ages living in Wales and wider.”

Gwanwyn is an arts programme for over 50s which runs a month-long festival held across Wales each May to celebrate creativity in older age.

It is run by Age Cymru and funded by the Welsh Government and Arts Council of Wales.

Commenting on Emma’s appointment, Claire Bottomley, Age Cymru’s Healthy Ageing Manager says:

“We are all absolutely delighted at Age Cymru to have Emma onboard to run the Gwanwyn programme and festival for us.

“She has the creativity and drive to take the Gwanwyn programme and festival to places they have never been and make them bigger and better than we have been able to do before.

“I’m really looking forward to working with her and I’m pleased to have her on my team.”

Gwanwyn is a month-long national festival held across Wales in May each year celebrating creativity in older age.

The aim of the festival is to:

Celebrate the opportunity of older age for renewal, growth and creativity, hence the connotations of new-life in the name ‘Gwanwyn’ meaning ‘springtime’ in the Welsh language;

Promote the benefits of exploring creativity, developing a critical voice and participating fully in the artistic and cultural life of local communities and Wales as a whole;

Offer opportunities for greater participation by older people in the arts, such as painting, photography, music, drama, storytelling, literature, dance or film during the month of May;

Highlight existing artistic work and creativity of groups and individuals who are older people themselves or whose work revolves around the concepts of older people and creativity;

Promote the participation of older people in the arts throughout the year and highlight existing or new opportunities available locally;

Gwanwyn is a collaborative initiative between key national organisations lead by Age Cymru, the Arts Council of Wales and the Welsh Government; working closely with local arts groups, active retirement and community groups, public libraries, museums, schools and care centres.
