Many regard Ian Rowlands as one of Wales' foremost contemporary playwrights. Rowlands and Kelligan have enjoyed a very fruitful professional relationship over many years, first acting together at the Sherman Theatre and since the inception of his On The Edge project, this will be the third Rowlands play that Kelligan has produced. The first was an early piece by the Porth born playwright 'A Blue Heron in the Womb' where the author uses "ideas and images of Welshness in both comic and serious ways..." He then directed Rowlands' controversial play 'Blink' which up until that time Rowlands had been unable to find a theatre or company willing to put on the play. It dealt with the sad and awful story of John Owen and his abuse of children in his charge. Rowlands had been a pupil in his class. Once Kelligan's production had demonstrated the great strength of the work the play toured throughout Wales and into England and had a production in New York, all under the FAB Theatre banner.
Marriage of Convenience, it is set on the day of the marriage of Charles and Diana, first opened in 1996, four years and over a hundred performances later the play won a Herald Angel award at the Edinburgh Festival,, the Dublin Dry Gin award for the best play at the Dublin Festival and Gareth Potter was nominated for best actor in the stage awards for his performance. An interview with the author, actor and director can be heard on S4C'a Wedi 7 Tuesday 8th Dec.
Potter now directs this script-held performance with Jam Thomas in the central role. Thomas, an actor frequently seen on S4C has just returned from filming Mr Nice with Rhys Ifans in the role of the notorious Howard Marks
