Historical Tale Of Love And Deceit, Siwan Comes To Carmarthen

Historical Tale Of Love And Deceit, Siwan Comes To Carmarthen Following their hard-hitting, engaging production of Y Pair (The Crucible), Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru are back at Carmarthen’s Lyric, 9-10 June with Siwan, a historical tale of treachery.

This powerful play, penned by Welsh poet, dramatist and historian Dr Saunders Lewis and set in Medieval times, is an enthralling tale of love, passion and forgiveness given a contemporary twist by the National Theatre Company of Wales.
With the Norman invaders besieging their Welsh counterparts, something drastic had to be done to put a halt to the ten-year hostilities and constant bombardment of defences. In 1203, Wales’ ruler Llywelyn the Great persuaded King John of England to accept his offer to marry the king’s 15-year-old daughter, Joan. While this hand in marriage cooled the conflict between the two nations, things were hotting up elsewhere and news of Siwan’s (the Welsh form of Joan) adulterous affair with Llywelyn’s Norman prisoner, Gwilym Brewys, erupted in a scandal of volcanic proportions. With Brewys duly hanged, Siwan was placed under house arrest until her husband found it in the best interests of himself and the nation of Wales to forgive the betrayal.

Performed in the Welsh language and directed by Judith Roberts, Siwan will be played by Ffion Dafis with Dyfan Roberts as Llywelyn, Rhys ap Hywel as Gwilym Brewys and Lisa Jên Brown as the ever supportive maid, Alys. Tickets, priced £8 - £10, are available from the box office: 0845 226 3508/09/10
