SNOW WHITE

Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl , Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl , December 16, 2013
SNOW WHITE by Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl I really enjoy this time of the year, because it is when I am able to take my young niece to the pantomime. For myself, I can take or leave pantomimes, but they just get a whole lot better when you are in the company of someone who is entranced by the familiar story, in fits of laughter at all the slapstick, sings her heart out at the silly singsong, boos heartily at the wicked villain and screams warnings at the hapless actors unable to see the ghost standing right behind them. Yes, isn’t life wonderful when seen through the eyes of a nine-year-old child?

Snow White at the Grand Pavilion in Porthcawl is such a delight, though, that I think I would probably have liked it as much if I had gone alone. It boasts a superbly hateful villain in the Wicked Queen, a delightful heroine in Snow Whiter-than-white, the most dashing of handsome Princes, a dame with more costumes than Vivienne Westwood and more face paint than Lady Gaga, a delightful jester whose jokes are silly enough to raise a multitude of giggles; and the overwhelming (for my niece, anyway) video appearance of Justin Fletcher as the Mirror On The Wall.

With rival attractions (and some big names) in nearby Cardiff and Swansea, it is an act of faith to choose Porthcawl over the others, but I have done it for the last three years and have been amply rewarded on every occasion. The sets and costumes would not be out of place in the West End and the cast have an enthusiasm for the task in hand that is wonderfully infectious.
