The Other Room continues opening season Cardiff’s first pub theatre The Other Room continues opening season with new bilingual play

Cardiff’s first pub theatre The Other Room, located in Porter’s, continues its ‘Life in Close-Up’ season with a new, bilingual play A Good Clean Heart by Alun Saunders, running 28 April to 16 May.

A Good Clean Heart is a brand new bilingual play by emerging playwright Alun Saunders and is a coming of age story about two brothers raised apart, in different families speaking different languages. Alun comments:

“I’m a proud first-language Welsh-speaker - Cymraeg is a wholly intrinsic part of who I am. And alongside writing this play, I've been deeply embroiled in the adoption process. I believe that one of the most important things I will do for my children will be to support and nurture their sense of identity. I believe that children (and later, adults) who have been adopted may, often, have questioned and explored their identity to a greater extent than many of us, and this was the seed of A Good Clean Heart.

I want us to ask whether our languages and cultures (going hand in hand) are an integral part of our being, or something we can choose to forget, or even 'change'. Who decides what nationality we are: birth certificates or our cultural feelings of identity? What happens and how do any of us react when the rug is pulled from under us?”

A Good Clean Heart will be directed by Mared Swain (Dirty Protest, Associate Director at Sherman Cymru 2011-14), who comments:

“I am thrilled to be working on a Good Clean Heart with Alun at The Other Room. As well as its themes being universal and relevant, its execution is really exciting to me. Being bilingual is something I am very proud of and this play really embraces a truly bilingual theatrical experience. It is inclusive and expressive and will challenge an audience to explore language and how we connect to and access language through sight and sound.”

Artistic Director of The Other Room Kate Wasserberg comments:

“When Alun explained his idea for this play I was immediately on board - I had seen his work for Dirty Protest and been blown away. The almost classical story of two siblings raised apart was compelling, rooted in Shakespeare but based on a heartbreaking true story Alun had discovered. With innovative animated surtitles, this is a bilingual play for Welsh and non-Welsh speakers alike that is fundamentally about love and its power to heal.”

A Good Clean Heart will feature Dorian Simpson and James Ifan and is the third production of The Other Room’s inaugural season ‘Life in Close-Up’. The first production was Blasted by Sarah Kane and the second was The Dying of Today by Howard Barker.

A Good Clean Heart by Alun Saunders is on at The Other Room 28 April – 16 May at 7.30pm. Tickets are available now from www.otherroomtheatre.com. To keep updated on The Other Room, you can also follow the team on Twitter @TORtheatre and Facebook www.facebook.com/otherroomtheatre
