Summerdance 09

Summerdance 09 Forty of Wales’ most talented young dancers take to the New Theatre stage this month (AUG) to perform two new works – and also give audiences an entertaining insight into dance class.

Engaging, exciting and exhilarating, the annual dance celebration summerdance 09 will fill the New Theatre stage on Saturday 8 August.

The performance is the culmination of the prestigious summer school for budding young dancers and this year the New Theatre’s Arts Active Department and National Dance Company Wales, previously Diversions, join forces with National Youth Dance Wales.

The collaboration aims to create an infrastructure for dancers in Wales that leads to National level, a clear route for young people to pursue a career in dance and provide a platform for them to showcase their skills whilst learning from professional dancers.

During the summer school, youngsters aged between 14-24 who have been carefully selected through an audition process, work alongside professional dancers to create two exhilarating new pieces of contemporary dance over the course of a week.

The dances are premiered with live music from the WNO Max Department directed by Artistic Associate for National Dance Company Wales, Roy-Campbell-Moore.

The two works are Mississippi by National Dance Company Wales dancers Maria Hayday and Yuval Lev and Valid Rand by Errol White, guest choreographer for National Youth Dance Wales 2009.

National Dance Company Wales dancers Viivi Keskinen and Stefanos Bizas also give the audience an insight into a regular morning dance class by leading summerdance participants in warming up exercises, to leaps and more demanding phrases.

Developing their skills and techniques and creating and rehearsing their own new dance productions, this is an ideal opportunity for ambitious dancers at the start of their career to collaborate with some of the best professional dancers in Wales. Past students of the summer school have gone on to develop dance careers and attend professional dance schools.

Summerdance 2009 artistic director Roy Campbell-Moore co-founded Diversions, now National Dance Company Wales, in 1983. He is the flagship company’s artistic associate and most recently choreographed Hinterland which National Dance Company Wales is touring this autumn across Wales, the UK and internationally.

Errol White has performed with some of the UK’s best known contemporary dance companies including National Dance Company Wales. A previous recipient of the Dance Europe magazine’s Critics Award for Best Male Performer and the Marion North Mentoring Award for Choreography he is Artistic Director of his own company (Errol White Dance Company).
