![]() 17.30, PLEASANCE COURTYARD, 2-28 AUG “Bursting with theatrical energy and full of visual wit… a sensational piece of ensemble playing… utterly brilliant.” The Sunday Herald on My Uncle Arly Last seen on the Fringe with their 2003 Assembly Rooms hit My Uncle Arly, Hoipolloi brandish their own form of fun, accessible, visual theatre, holding adults and children enthralled by their fresh, individual approach since their 1994 debut The Naked King of the Morning. Floating showcases the inimitable talents of emerging Welsh performance artist Hugh Hughes as he uses slides, film projection and Powerpoint to relate his amazing tale of life on board the Isle of Anglesey when it embarked on a dangerous and thrilling 57 day sea voyage after breaking free from the Welsh mainland. On 1st April 1982 and earthquake destroyed the Menai bridge and Anglesey was swept into the terrible storms of the north Atlantic. While the islanders celebrated their new found independence, only Hugh battled to bring the island home, creating a huge mast and sail to control the island’s passage. Twenty three years later, Hugh and his friend Sioned Rowlands venture north again to bring this incredible journey to the Fringe. Shôn Dale-Jones, Artistic Director of Hoipolloi is delighted to be supporting Hugh’s attempt at bringing the story to life: “Hugh is an amazingly versatile new artist. I have known him since 1992 and when we met again last year I was reminded of Hugh’s ambition to create a performance based on an episode from his life. He said to me, “I’ve got a show”. Following long discussion I decided Hoipolloi should support his first steps towards creating a live performance and introduce him to our audience. I hope that audiences enjoy Floating as much as I have enjoyed watching Hugh create this show.” Hoipolloi produces both venue based and site specific work, celebrating the imagination by creating strong, visually powerful worlds, with recent works like Ablaze!, a fire spectacle performed in front of 1,500 people, and their touring show The Impostor, a new interpretation of Molière’s Tartuffe. Log on to www.hoipolloi.org.uk to see Hugh’s diary recording his journey to Edinburgh and run at the Fringe. Floating has been selected for Escalator East to Edinburgh. Every year Escalator East to Edinburgh helps artists and arts organisations to raise their profile and perform to new audiences as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Equally suitable for adults and children… we were much amused.” The Guardian on My Uncle Arly Venue: PLEASANCE COURTYARD Time: 17.30 (18.40) Dates: 2-28 AUG, (not 7, 14) |
