Moby Dick at the Riverfront Newport

Moby Dick at the Riverfront Newport Thursday 18 May at 7.30pm until Saturday 20 May.

Moby Dick is the tale of the captain and crew of the 19th Century whaling ship the Pequod, which voyages out of Nantucket, Massachusetts in pursuit of a fabled, cunning and notorious quarry.

The story follows the fortunes of Captain Ahab and members of his crew including Ishmael, the novice mariner, Starbuck and Stubb the ship’s mates, Queequeg and Tashtego the harpooners, and Pip, the cabin boy.

For three whole years Ahab rages across the seas, whipped on by his obsession with the elusive white monster. During the voyage they encounter other vessels whose crew warn Ahab of the dangers of pursuing Moby Dick.

Undeterred, Ahab continues to drive his ill-assorted crew into the teeth of storm and gale, determined to find and destroy Moby Dick. Unstoppable, the story hurtles towards an inevitable and foreboding climax that fulfils a terrifying prophecy.

Moby Dick is a compelling tale of human endeavour, a great struggle, fought out on tumultuous seas. An epic account of one man and his crew who dare to shake a fist in the face of God and suffer terrible consequences.

Compass Theatre Company has an international reputation for productions acclaimed by critics and audiences alike for their passion, intelligence and chutzpah.

There will be a post-show Q & A session on Friday 19 May. These have proved very popular in the past and are a chance for audience members to participate in an informal and enjoyable dialogue with the Company.

Ticket prices are £14.50, £13.50 and £12 with Reductions and CLC available.

“Herman Melville’s ponderous novel can be adapted successfully for the stage and here is the proof… Richard Hurford’s adaptation remains faithful to Melville’s vision but it is clear, muscular and energetic” The Stage.
